February is American Heart Month as well as Valentines Day, so timing is just right for a heart healthy tip that involves a favorite sweet treat.
As most people know, cardiovascular activity is very beneficial for a healthy heart, but what you may not know is that consuming chocolate may incur additional benefit to your heart. Chocolate lovers now have something to celebrate – a decadent Valentine treat not only steals one’s heart, but it also keeps it pumping and healthy.
What makes chocolate so special? Chocolate contains Flavonoids, which are naturally-occurring compounds found in plant-based foods such as cranberries, apples, peanuts, onions, tea and red wine. There are more than 4,000 flavonoid compounds.
A new study from the National Academy of Sciences, reveals that epicatechin, one of a group of chemicals known as flavanols, is directly linked to improved circulation and other hallmarks of cardiovascular health.
Researchers at the University of California, Davis have determined a direct relationship between the intake of certain flavanols present in cocoa, their absorption into the circulation and their effects on cardiovascular function in humans. In a nutshell, chocolate may reduce blood pressure, improve blood flow, and reduce the amount of LDL (low density lipoprotein) in the blood; LDL levels are another risk factor for heart disease.
Research suggests that consuming foods or beverages with high-flavanol content may beneficially impact the inner lining of blood vessels. This lining endothelium controls blood flow by opening and narrowing the blood vessel walls. Flavonols tend to make the blood vessels more elastic, which tends to improve blood flow, and reduce the incidence of plaque buildup and other types of damage.
These findings are good news for chocolate lovers alike. But like most good things, it’s best to keep it in moderation. A small amount of dark chocolate, with at least 70% cocoa, may be beneficial to your heart. So, be sure to savor your Valentine treat - your heart will thank you for it!
